This weekend (October 31st) marks both the awesome Warhammer Day and Halloween, so today Jalen has decided to look at his top favourite monster (sized) models!
I absolutely LOVE monsters in all shapes and sizes, but I especially love the ones on the bigger side! Getting to grab that enormous box off the shelf, getting home and cracking it open to pull out those giant sprues and begin to monster mash your creation to stomp across the battlefield, its an unbeatable feeling for me. I want to own so many of these monsters, some of them multiple of, and today I want to go through a few of the big bad lads and ladies that I cannot WAIT to build, paint and field!
The Great Unclean One
In no particular order let’s begin with an obvious one for me, The Great Unclean One. This is one of the first models I instantly fell in love with and the reason I started a Nurgle AoS force, this absolute chunky unit sits on a comfortable 130mm sized base and stands about 4 inches tall, so he is more of a girthy guy rather than a tall guy.
I love everything about this model, the horrid grimace splitting across his swollen face, the ugly rotten sausage fingered fists, the painful looking deep rips and tears across his skin and of course those nice big boils and pustules that litter his rotund form. He has some fantastic options to pick from as well, 3 different heads (One being specifically for the name character, Rotigus) and four different weapons (The massive bilesword or doomsday bell in the right hand, and a large bileblade or plague flail in its left hand.) Also comes with 6 little nurglings to scatter across his huge base!
This model is an absolute treat for painters, the amount of different skin tones you could imagine for this guy is unreal! Maybe paint him orange like a big pumpkin, or the classic rotting green to sell the disgusting look, a sepia yellow shade to show a jaundice like effect across his hulking form or maybe a disgusting pale flesh tone and use some red and purple washes around those sores to really make them look like they hurt!
I do own one of these large gentlemen (Thanks to the lovely Matt) and I cannot wait to paint this guy up to match him with my other demons! Maybe I will post a process article?
Nagash, Supreme Lord of the Undead
Next on our list is the Supreme Lord of the Undead himself, Nagash! This 9 inch tall skeletal monster was one of the first monster sized units I received, my lovely girlfriend purchased him for me, thanks Star! He is still currently sitting safely on the sprue in his sealed box for the day I eventually work up the courage to tackle him!
Nagash is one of my favourite centerpiece units in the entire game, he is the definition of imposing, floating menacingly towards his unlucky foes surfing on a spectral wave of banshees and books, wielding the Mortis Blade or the Staff of Power whilst reading his favourite book – The Liber Mortis. There is so much to love about this model, especially for painters, I have been thinking for months on how I will achieve a ghostly look to his ethereal cohort of banshees that circle him, by wet blending deep greens up to light ethereal greens. Nagash is both imposing on the tabletop and on the painting table, there are tons of details to pick out here, but with some patience and practice I feel he will be a fantastic addition to any Death force or even a beautiful display model.
Haruspex:
Not as big as the other models on this list, still a big and impressive unit, nonetheless. The Haruspex is a guy I really vibe with, it’s a digestive system on legs its gaping maw contains its inside out stomach lined with three massive jaws and it uses its huge crushing claws to scoop up unlucky prey into the abyss of its stomach, just like myself at most restaurants.
I love how absolutely horrifying this model is, the massive mouth(s) agape ready to consume any Space Marine that gets just a bit too brave! The painting potential on this guy is so exciting to me, of course you can paint his fleshy bits and carapace based on one of the known Hive fleets such as Kraken or Leviathan or even based on your own Hive fleet and that’s super fun, but the mouth is an entirely different beast! You can really get into the detailing within those horrid lumps and bumps, then maybe coat it with ‘Ard Coat making it look horrible and slimey! You could even get some UHU glue and make some drool strands to hang off those horrible longer tongue bits, maybe even grab a spare space marine and glue him inside the mouth too look like a tasty armored snack!
I don’t yet own one of these beautiful creatures, but its high up on my endless list of big monster wants!
C’Tan Shard of the Void Dragon:
The newest of the units on this list, the Shard of the Void Dragon is really showing the pure beauty of Games Workshops new and impressive sculpts. I remember reading about C’tan like the Nightbringer and the Deceiver and always thought that the models never did them justice but wow the Void Dragon really plays the part of this pure cosmic horror beast.
The Void Dragon hovers above an 80mm base and stands at about 8 inches high and comes with three awesome head options! I absolutely love all of options but the cool one with the gem in the center is my favourite for sure and will be using that for my Void Dragon!
The detail on this model has me very excited to paint it, I cannot wait to slap this guy up with some gold and make him shine like the true god he is! The pure awesomeness of this unit being held aloft by this crackling blackstone energy is so impressive, I really cannot wait to have this badass at the center of my Necron army disintegrating my opponent’s tanks!
Avalenor, the Stoneheart King/Alarith Spirit of the Mountain:
Another new unit on this list but one that I am (obviously) excited to get my grubby monster loving hands on. Stomping across the battlegrounds on a whopping 100mm base and has plenty of spare parts to add to your existing Realm Lords or make your Alarith look distinctively different from another! The box can make either Avalenor or two different looks of Alarith!
So it’s a big cow. With a hammer(s). So, what more do you really need from me here?! The unit looks amazing, the handcrafted ceramic-like armor that they wear looks so nice to paint and I just love the smooth and curved edges on the massive shoulder pauldrons. So many neat small details cover this model as well, the little tassels hanging off its armor panels, the gemstones embedded in the chest plate and horn armour, the tiny trees growing from the rugged mountain on its back and small indentations on the armour panels look like a treat to spend a nice afternoon painting! I pretty much adore every aspect of this model and its different versions and its 100% on my Christmas list this year!
MEGA GARGANT: FEE FI FO FUM, JALEN REALLY WANTS ONE!
I am so excited for Mega Gargants and Sons Of Behemat and they are going to be my fourth AoS army!
This kit is thunderously big with 129 components and three different variants to build: Warstomper, Kraken Eater and the Gatebreaker! There are plenty of options inside the box to mix and match the unit and I have seen hundreds of amazing customized and converted Gargants that really take the battlefield by storm. The smash their way through armies on 130mm bases and stand tall over almost every other unit in AoS (Nagash and Archeon have them beat but that’s ok.)
There are so many things I wanna do with this kit, but the main being to convert it into a giant Nurgle Gargant! I am thinking of sticking a big toothy mouth onto this massive fella’s gut, replacing his head with a Great Unclean One’s head and equipping him with a massive bilesword! I am hoping to eventually own a good few of these big boys and I really think the amount of customization with both conversions and paintjobs that you can do with this kit is immeasurable.
If you have picked up a Mega Gargant feel free to show us! It is always fantastic to see what the community is up to!
